Living in the L.A. area makes you forget what a "real" city is like.
The kind of place where lots of shops, restaurants, galleries are all
packed together within walking or at least easy public transport range.
Real cities stack the inhabitants vertically not side by side in a
vast, sprawling, never ending, suburb. It's not that I don't love Long
Beach and the lovely, if slightly sterile, neighborhood where we live.
It's not like I'm planing to move, but, a real city offers the kind of
sensory exuberance that I sometimes miss.

The California chapter of NSPRA - CALSPRA - is hosting the annual national conference in
San Francisco. Margo is on the board of CALSPRA and I decided to tag
along. We have been to the bay area many times. What with family and
friends we know Marin and Walnut Creek area well, but, we seem to never
get a chance to hang out in the city - and after all - it is one of the
top 10 great cities of the US.

This spring it seems like a mama possum took up residence in my back
yard. Maybe even two mamas. The dogs where agitated, the cats on the
hunt and we heard strange noises on the back porch roof. One evening I
even saw our cat Killer in a stand off with a very big opossum. Killer,
despite his name, decided to back of when the possum displayed it's
reptilian rows of nasty looking teeth.
The cat bowls were
always licked clean in the morning. Nature took it's course and the
fattened mama or mamas dilivered a baby possum boom. Possums can rear
up to 13 young in one litter. Well that's a good thing - most don't
make it.

This is the way to travel. Wish we had this back home. Hope the train
line, that's in the stimulus package, between San Francisco and L.A.,
really works out. Trains, especially fast and comfortable ones, are the best way to get around in Poland and I guess Europe.

Well it's the middle of May and all I have is the first 3 days and a little about the flight home posted. I guess this can't be called blogging because it's not current any more. I might have to rethink how i am going to work this site. It does take some time.
Anyway... I will finish the whole Poland '09 story as I get the chance. I have photos, I have notes and the memories are still fresh. So here it goes...

Well actually we have been back now for a few days now - just couldn't
find the time to make the post. The flight was long and uncomfortable -
I am never flying Swissair again. First of all they seperated our
seating even though we bought the tickets together and we were
obviously a family. When we wanted the situation fixed they kept
pushing it down the authority ladder.

My journaling plans keep slipping away. It's already Tuesday and the last post was about Saturday. It takes longer to post than I thought it would. Maybe I'm overdoing it. Sunday and Monday will have to wait.
Anyway, as is now the tradition, we all stayed up late and got up late. Still can't get our body's to understand the time change. It is getting better and tomorrow we have to be at the train station by 6 am to catch the train to Krakow. That should make for a forced reset.
Today it's Museums after we have some breakfast. Rachel was exited to find peanut butter and grape jelly at the store yesterday.

On Saturday it took us a long time to wake up. Our bodies are still not
here or there. We will be going to see the Warsaw Mermaid and than
Julek wants to walk to Łazienki. Seems a long walk to me but we will
see. When we get back Michal will hook up with us. Evening plans are
still up in the air.

Where are we, what day is it, what's my name?
We are all in a daze. Our bodies are still on Long Beach time but we
have to force them 9 hours ahead into Warszawa time. We are going to
try to stay awake as long as we can.I'm just so glad the dire forcasts of rain and sleet did not come true. There are some patches of old snow but it's very pleasant, if a little nippy, outside.
